About Minecraft

Minecraft is one of the best-selling video games of all time [1], a boundless sandbox where your imagination is the only limit. Dropped into a procedurally generated world made entirely of blocks, you gather resources, craft tools, build shelters, and explore biomes ranging from lush jungles to frozen tundras and deep underground cave systems.

In Survival mode, you must eat, fend off creepers, skeletons, and the dreaded Enderman, and ultimately defeat the Ender Dragon to "win", though the adventure never truly ends. Switch to Creative mode for unlimited resources and the freedom to construct anything from a cosy cottage to a full-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower.

With an enormous modding community, thousands of custom servers, and regular free updates, Minecraft has remained one of the most-played games on the planet for over a decade.

New to Minecraft? Start here for the basics.

Minecraft is a sandbox video game where players explore an infinite, procedurally generated world made entirely of blocks. You gather resources, craft items, build structures, and survive against monsters, alone or with friends on a multiplayer server.
Minecraft was originally created by Markus "Notch" Persson and launched in 2011. It is now developed by Mojang Studios, a subsidiary of Microsoft, and remains the best-selling video game of all time with over 350 million copies sold.
Minecraft offers four core modes: Survival (gather resources, manage health and hunger), Creative (unlimited blocks, free building, no damage), Adventure (custom maps with restricted interactions), and Spectator (observe the world without interacting). Multiplayer servers often add custom modes like Skyblock, Factions, or Prison.
Java Edition (PC only) has the richest modding ecosystem and uses server software like Paper or Spigot. Bedrock Edition runs on consoles, mobile, and Windows and supports cross-platform play. We offer hosting for both editions, just pick whichever matches your players.

Tips to get you started on your first world.

Punch trees to collect wood, this is your first resource for everything. Craft a wooden pickaxe, mine some stone, and upgrade your tools. Find or build a shelter before your first night, as hostile mobs spawn in the dark.
As soon as you spawn, collect wood and craft a crafting table, then make a bed if you find wool from sheep. Sleep through the night to skip it entirely. If you cannot find wool, dig into a hillside and seal the entrance, a dirt or stone burrow is enough to survive.
Some popular Java Edition seeds include -4186746847636013829 (spawn near a mushroom island), 2151901553968352745 (classic "Glacier" seed), and 8638613833825887773 (village and stronghold close to spawn). Enter a seed in the world creation screen under "More World Options".

Java Java 17+ (bundled with the launcher)
No. The official Minecraft Launcher bundles its own Java runtime since version 1.18. You do not need to install Java manually unless you are running a server or using a third-party launcher.
Lower your render distance to 6–8 chunks, set graphics to Fast, and disable smooth lighting. On Java Edition, installing performance mods like Sodium and Lithium via Fabric can dramatically improve FPS beyond what vanilla settings allow.
Yes. Bedrock Edition is generally better optimised out of the box and runs more smoothly on lower-end hardware, particularly on mobile and console. Java Edition offers more flexibility and mod support but benefits more from a capable CPU since it is single-threaded for most world logic.

New to modding? Follow these steps to get a stable modded setup running in minutes.

Mods are installed via mod loaders such as Forge or Fabric. Thousands of mods and complete modpacks are available on platforms like CurseForge and Modrinth. With our hosting plans you can install a full modpack in one click from your control panel, no manual file management required.
Choose one mod loader first to avoid compatibility issues. Fabric is lightweight and beginner-friendly, while Forge supports a larger number of heavy modpacks. Start with only one ecosystem before experimenting further.
Yes. A launcher prevents manual setup errors and manages profiles automatically. Install either CurseForge App for simplicity or Prism Launcher for a lightweight advanced alternative.
Create a new profile inside your launcher, select the Minecraft version, choose a mod loader such as Fabric or Forge, and launch the game once so the required folders are generated automatically.
Only download mods from trusted platforms like CurseForge Mods or Modrinth. Always verify the Minecraft version, loader type, and required dependencies listed on the mod page.
The easiest method is using your launcher's built-in mod browser. Alternatively, download the mod .jar file and place it inside the /mods folder of your Minecraft instance.
Start with performance mods to ensure stability. Fabric users should install Sodium, Lithium, and FerriteCore. Forge users typically install Embeddium or Rubidium together with FerriteCore before adding gameplay mods.
Install only a few mods at a time and launch the game between installs. Incremental testing makes it easy to identify crashes caused by version conflicts or missing dependencies.
Check the logs/latest.log file inside your instance folder. Most crashes are caused by missing dependencies, incorrect mod loader versions, or mismatched Minecraft versions.
Yes. Before adding or removing mods, copy your world folder located in .minecraft/saves/. Mod changes can permanently alter worlds, so backups prevent data loss.
Add mods gradually in this order: performance mods first, then gameplay or content mods, and finally shaders or resource packs. This approach keeps performance stable and simplifies troubleshooting.
A reliable starting setup is Fabric loader with Sodium, Lithium, JourneyMap, AppleSkin, and REI or JEI for recipe viewing. This keeps gameplay close to vanilla while improving performance and usability.

Everything you need to know about playing and hosting with others.

With GameGrandpa hosting, setup takes under two minutes. Choose a plan, select your server software (Vanilla, Paper, Forge, Fabric, etc.), and we handle the rest, hardware, networking, DDoS protection, and automated backups. Your control panel lets you manage worlds, players, and plugins instantly.
The Vanilla Minecraft plan supports up to 10 players. For larger communities or modded servers with higher resource demands, our Modded or Custom plans provide the extra horsepower you need.
Yes. Every server comes with top-tier security protocols and automatic backups included, so your world and progress are always safe.
Head to our server hosting page, choose your plan (Vanilla, Modded, or Custom), fill in your name, email, and any requirements, and submit your order. We'll take care of everything from there.
